Ocean Gladiators

Posted on 29 August, 2016 at 4:50 Comments comments (0)

I've started training Mark Mathews to get him fit for the up coming Hawaii season. He wanted to do something different rather than the standard gym and pool work so we came up with the idea to create some group surf sessions where we can have a fun competitive team environment.

The group environment will help motivate and challenge everyone who joins in. It doesn't matter the level of surfing you're at as we all need to work on different aspects of our surfing. ie breathing, paddling, confidence, wave selection, pop ups, and exercises to do huge turns.

Sessions will run every Monday and Thursday 6am rain, hail or 10 feet.

Cost after will be $60 per session or $300 for a 6 week block. Location will vary from Maroubra to Bondi depending on conditions.

Monday the 28th of August meet at Maroubra beach (in the car park next to the skate park) @5:50am for a 6am start.

Bring your board, wetsuit and water. Session will run for 1 hour and a coffee after for a recap of the classic events that go down during the session.

Also bring a smile the main goal is to have heaps of fun and laugh/meet new friends.

HEALTH TIP FOR WINTER

Posted on 21 June, 2016 at 5:45 Comments comments (0)

As winter sets in it can be tempting to start eating more of those warm comfort foods that are often high in fat, salt and sugar. Instead, find comfort in foods such as warming and nourishing soups and stews full of flavour and healthy vegetables. Be sure your diet includes winter fruit and vegetables packed with vitamins and minerals such as sweet potato, green leafy vegetables, beetroot, kiwi fruit, mandarins, bananas, garlic and ginger. http://eatdrinkpaleo.com.au/fall-off-the-bone-chicken-soup-recipe/

Personal Training

Benefits of working with the Fit Ball.

1. Back health: Strengthens spinal stabilisers and structures responsible for back health and injury prevention.

2. Improved posture: Balancing on the ball builds postural awareness and strength.

3. Core stability: Your deep abdominal and spinal muscles which form a belt around your spine are strengthened. These core muscles stabilise the spine, pelvis and shoulder.

4. Mobility and flexibility: For freedom in movement.

Even when you are just sitting on the ball, it engages the stabilizer muscles. You need to use your abdominal and back muscles to keep your balance on the ball. Training with an exercise ball in the right manner may be beneficial for healthy posture. It is important to maintain proper alignment when using an exercise ball to prevent injury and always consult a Personal Trainer before commencing training.

Taj Burrow Retires...

Posted on 9 May, 2016 at 10:05 Comments comments (0)

Yes, the 37-year-old surfing legend is calling it a career.

As some of you know I was lucky enough to be involved in Taj's career, Training and travelling together for the past 8 years where he won numerous events. I will be sad to see him go but wish him and his family all the best in the future!

Taj's main reason for the sudden retirement was the arrival of his and partner Bec Jobson's daughter Arabella Rose "I felt like I had too much going on. With the birth of my baby, there's been a lot of sleepless nights and I don't have [former trainer] Johnny Gannon in my corner cracking the whip and I just haven't been able to keep up. Everything's been going too fast and I've been going into events not prepared. It's no fun going into events half-assed and not giving it my all, it's been making me upset and stressed." he said.

John Gannon is a Surf Coach for all ages....professional, competition or just for fun. Call me on 0420 780 789 or visit Surf SpecificTraining.
